French Revolution Extra Credit

For a maximum of 15 extra credit points, perform either solo or with a group (max 4 people) the French national anthem, La Marseillaise. You must perform at least the first two verses, but I will smile upon groups that choose to do more. The more enthusiasm you have, the more extra credit you will receive.

La Marseillaise was composed in one night during the French Revolution (April 24, 1792) by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, a captain of the engineers and amateur musician stationed in Strasbourg in 1792. It was played at a patriotic banquet at Marseilles, and printed copies were given to the revolutionary forces then marching on Paris. They entered Paris singing this song, and to it they marched to the Tuileries on August 10th.

Ironically, Rouget de Lisle was himself a royalist and refused to take the oath of allegiance to the new constitution. He was imprisoned and barely escaped the guillotine. Originally entitled Chant de guerre de l'armeé du Rhin (War Song of the Army of the Rhine), the anthem became called La Marseillaise because of its popularity with volunteer army units from Marseilles.

The Convention accepted it as the French national anthem in a decree passed July 14, 1795. La Marseillaise was banned by Napoleon during the Empire, and by Louis XVIII on the Second Restoration (1815), because of its revolutionary associations. Authorized after the July Revolution of 1830, it was again banned by Napoleon III and not reinstated until 1879.

The text here consists of only the first two verses [out of seven].

VERSE 1:
Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé.
Contre nous, de la tyrannie,
L'étandard sanglant est levé,
l'étandard sanglant est levé,
Entendez-vous, dans la compagnes.
Mugir ces farouches soldats
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Egorger vos fils,
vos compagnes.

Aux armes citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons.

[In English]
Let us go, children of the fatherland
Our day of Glory has arrived.
Against us stands tyranny,
The bloody flag is raised,
The bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear in the countryside
The roar of these savage soldiers
They come right into our arms
To cut the throats of your sons,
your country.

To arms, citizens!
Form up your battalions
Let us march, Let us march!
That their impure blood
Should water our fields

VERSE 2:
Amour sacré de la Patrie,
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs,
Liberté, liberté cherie,
Combats avec tes defénseurs;
Combats avec tes défenseurs.
Sous drapeaux, que la victoire
Acoure à tes mâles accents;
Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!

Aux armes citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons.

[In English]
Sacred love of the fatherland
Guide and support our vengeful arms.
Liberty, beloved liberty,
Fight with your defenders;
Fight with your defenders.
Under our flags, so that victory
Will rush to your manly strains;
That your dying enemies
Should see your triumph and glory

To arms, citizens!
Form up your battalions
Let us march, Let us march!
That their impure blood
Should water our fields

Interpretive question for DRM

When Declaration of the Rights of Man states, "The security of the rights of man and of the citizens requires public military forces. These forces are, therefore, established for the good of all and not for the personal advantage of those whom they shall be intrusted." Does it mean that everyone needs protection from other people, and not to use that protection for themselves but for everyone? If so, are men abusing their liberty; so much so that they need protection from each other?

Saladin Ayyubi

Objective:
To be able to lead this beautiful country known as Finnsgard and also to improve it in matters of economic, religious, and social affairs. I hope that I will be able to present solid reasons why I am the perfect man for this specific job of replacing Queen Finn as the new absolute monarch.

Experience: 1189-1192 Near East (Anatolia, Levant, Israel)
Third Crusade
- 1152: Started work in the service of the Syrian ruler, Nurredin.
- 1164: Starts to show his military and strategical qualities under 3 campaigns against the Crusaders who were established in Palestine, with the first campaign this year.
- 1169: Serves as second to the commander in chief of the Syrian army, my uncle Shirkuh. Shirkuh became vizier of Egypt, but died after only 2 months. Then I took his place as vizier.
- 1183: Conquers the important north-Syrian city of Aleppo.
- 1186: Conquers Mosul in northern Iraq.
- 1187: With new strength he attacks the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, and after 3 months of fighting gets control over the city.
- 1189: A third Crusade manages to enlarge the coastal area of Palestine, while Jerusalem remains under my control.

Accomplishments:
- Because of the many different cultures I have come across during my years of conquering, I have been able to handle different situations with different kinds of people relatively well.
- The chivalrous relationship between me and the Christian King Richard the Lionheart , showing that I'm able to work with very different people.
- I've conquered many different lands, such as Damascus and Aleppo (in Syria), Moslum (in Iraq), and all of Jerusalem.
- I governed Egypt, Northern Mesopotamia, Palestine and Syria, this showing that I have experience in governing.

References:
- King Richard the Lionheart.

- King Guy of Lusignan
King of Jerusalem (1186 - 1187)

Interview Questions:

1. The biggest problem that i will probably face is that Finssgard's social class is very divided so I will have to make sure that the poor will also be able to get a good education and be able to provide for their family. I will solve this problem by providing education for people who can't afford it generally. Through this I hope that the social system of Finnsgard will be more equal in the amount of wealth that each family has. Another big problem that I think I will face as the new ruler of Finnsgard is the fact that since Finnsgardians are very religious they aren't very open to new ideas. Because of this I will impose the rule that states that people can follow any religion that they want so that they can choose whether they want to believe the new ideas or not.

2. In my opinion my greatest talent is the fact that i am great at conquering other lands and discovering new places. An example of my great conquering skills is that i was able to conquer and control Syria, Egypt, northern Mesopotamia, and Palestine. To add to that idea, I also started a war against the crusaders from Europe and was successful in conquering Jerusalem. This talent will help Finnsgard in order to expand because we will have better resources and a greater population so that we can have a greater and stronger army. Another great talent of mine is that I have been known to be a great advisor. Due to this I can also help Finnsgard by giving my advise to the highly important priests. This way I can help people who want to follow a new religion.

3. I simply AM the best monarch for this job. I have lots of experience when it comes to ruling nations as I was named the king of Egypt among others. I have also proven to be a great conqueror and advisor. I was able to conquer Jerusalem and win a war against the very strong army from the European crusaders. This shows how I am able to beat any nation no matter how big or strong their army might be. Finally, I am also able to get along well with very different people as you can see from my chivalrous relationship with King Richard the Lionheart.
